Pressed to Perfection: The Art of Achieving Ideal Flower Pressing Pressure

Ensuring adequate pressure when pressing flowers using a wooden flower press with straps is crucial for achieving well-flattened, preserved specimens. Here are some tips to help you apply the right amount of pressure:

Layer Flowers Evenly: Begin by placing a layer of absorbent paper (such as lining paper, blotting paper, or parchment paper) on the bottom of the press. Arrange your flowers on this layer evenly, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Avoid stacking too many flowers in one layer (this can result in uneven pressure).

Add Additional Layers: If you have more flowers to press, add additional layers of absorbent paper and flowers on top of the first layer. Alternate layers of flowers and paper until you have all your specimens arranged. Depending on what type of wooden flower press you have, you can press anywhere between three and nine layers. (If you have a Ditsy Flowers Flower Press, it will be six layers).

Positioning of Straps: Carefully place the top layer of absorbent paper on your arranged flowers. Then, position the wooden top of the press and secure it in place with the straps. Make sure the straps are evenly tightened, and there is balanced pressure on the entire surface.

Check for Tightness: Periodically check the tightness of the straps, especially during the first few days of pressing. As the flowers release moisture, the paper can become damp, causing the press to loosen. Tighten the straps as needed to maintain consistent pressure.

Balance the Layers: If you're pressing multiple layers of flowers, make sure each layer has an even distribution of pressure. Uneven pressure can result in uneven pressing and flattened flowers.

Choose the Right Straps: Ensure that the straps are of good quality and in good condition. Weak or damaged straps may not provide adequate pressure. Replace them if necessary.

Be Patient: Remember that flower pressing is a gradual process. Flowers need time to release their moisture and flatten properly. Avoid the temptation to check or release pressure too soon.

Store in a Dry Place: Place the flower press in a dry, well-ventilated area during the pressing process. A humid environment can hinder the drying and pressing of your flowers.

By following these tips and regularly monitoring the pressure, you can achieve consistent and adequate pressure when pressing flowers with a wooden flower press, resulting in beautifully preserved specimens.
